Stephen Joseph

Biography
"Cookie lovers of California rejoice!" wrote the Financial Times, after a frivolous 14-day legal stunt against cookies was dropped by media-lusting lawyer Stephen L. Joseph. He sued to prevent Kraft from selling Oreos to anyone under the age of 21, because they contained trans fat. When Joseph admitted his suit was mostly a publicity stunt, the Chicago Tribune reported that the British-born lawyer was "criticized in legal circles for possibly abusing the U.S. courts system."

As a leading legal shark taking a bite out of our food choices, it was a given that Joseph, a former Washington, DC lobbyist, would attend the 2003 Public Health Advocacy Institute (PHAI) conference "intended to encourage and support litigation against the food industry." Joseph, who runs BanTransFats.com, spoke at 2004 event.

Joseph is a good fit with the public-health zealots at PHAI, who have threatened to bring their own suits against food makers. At the 2003 PHAI conference, Joseph declared that trial lawyers' biggest obstacle is "the conservative, right-wing public." He continued: "It's white males who love freedom versus moms who care about what their kids eat."
