BiographyHarvard Sociology professor Steven Gortmaker co-authored a deeply flawed study, purportedly linking soda to childhood obesity with 2003 Public Health Advocacy Institute (PHAI) attendee David Ludwig. A 2004 PHAI speaker, Gortmaker followed up with Ludwig in a 2004 study that found -- shock and surprise -- that overweight kids tended to eat more fast food than did lean teens, when both were offered all they could eat. Gortmaker has also co-authored three studies with fellow PHAI speaker William Dietz and two with 2003 speaker Aviva Must. Gortmaker has used his research to justify everything from bans on soda in schools to fat taxes.
