Biography
University of Pennsylvania professor Shiriki Kumanyika is the Prevention Group chairperson of the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) -- a policy-pushing body of the pharmaceutical company-funded International Association for the Study of Obesity. The IOTF hypes the so-called "obesity epidemic," raising demand for its supporters’ diet pills. Kumanyika maintains at least one relationship with a company that profits from weight hysteria pushed by IOTF: She’s on the scientific advisory board for Weight Watchers International, and was at one time listed on the company’s website as its "Medical Director."
Along with IOTF's Philip James and Neville Rigby, Kumanyika co-authored an article for the second annual Public Health Advocacy Institute conference on "Legal Approaches to the Obesity Epidemic." It advocated "health impact assessments on trade arrangements" and the use of "powers so far reserved largely for acute food safety issues to restrict trade" on foods that nutrition scolds don't approve of. The trio also argued that "This 'personal responsibility' approach has … clearly failed."
